Since 2016, the Schools have been participating in the ” Speak Truth to Power ” programme, organised in Greece by the Vardinoyannis Foundation in collaboration with Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. The Greek programme was under the responsibility of the former President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopis Pavlopoulos and now its current President Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, while the Honorary Committee of the Greek Programme consists of prominent academics and professors (alphabetically):

Rector Eleni Arveler – President of the European Cultural Centre of Delphi, Prof. Athanasios – Meletios Dimopoulos – Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Kiki Dimoulas – Member of the Academy of Athens, Prof. Christos Zerephos – Member of the Academy of Athens, Prof. George Babiniotis – Former Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Prof. Dimitrios Pantermalis – President of the Acropolis Museum.

The program is a global exclusive of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and has been introduced to millions of students at all levels in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, showing them that they can make a difference in the global struggle for justice.

Kerry Kennedy’s book, on which the project is based, was published in 2000, and has since been translated into seven languages, including Greek. It includes over 50 interviews with human rights defenders, including Nobel Prize winners, and is a hymn to the indomitable human spirit. Nelson Mandela’s commentary on the book is indicative: “The lives of ordinary women and men in this book, lives of heroes, inspire all those who believe in freedom and justice.”

Educators at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Center based on Kerry Kennedy’s book created an educational book to teach the Speak Truth to Power Program in schools.

The aim of the programme is to empower students so that they can defend human rights themselves. As students begin to identify themselves as human rights defenders, they learn to take an active role in the effort to create a more just and peaceful world.

What makes the ” Speak Truth to Power” education programme stand out is its power to inspire action. By allowing students to see themselves as defenders of human rights, it also activates the force within them to defend in their everyday lives.
