Global Citizenship and Micro-credit

Our Global Citizens in Year 7 have been establishing some basic concepts of financial literacy in the unit “Wealth and Poverty” of the Global Citizenship course. What are the qualities one looks for in a person when lending them something of value? What qualities do banks look for in borrowers? What are loan sharks? How can micro-credit work and help people leave the state of poverty and stand on their own feet as entrepreneurs? All these and even more related questions were answered in the past few lessons, where students engaged in meaningful discussions and, to top it off, they thoroughly researched the Grameen Bank, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for their work to “create economic and social development from below”. The Grameen Bank’s mission is to eradicate poverty using the tool of micro-credit (small loans made to the poor). Our students can’t wait to learn more about how the world “works”!
